We’re sorry that this took a couple hours, but we wanted to take this to the right person. National editor Roger Smith responds:
We’ve written relatively little about the birther issue for the past year. However, we cover politics, and we are obligated to tell potential voters what potential candidates are talking about.
This, by the way, is one of the great uses of Tumblr for media companies, as a platform for accountability and interaction with your readers. Nice job, LAT.
From Politics editor Garance Franke-Ruta:
In the past, The Atlantic has covered birtherism in the context of other stories — something a potential candidate has brought up, or something discussed by a reputable pollster. We have not, and will not, cover birtherism as if it were a serious stand-alone issue facing the Obama administration
…And we think y’all know where we stand on birthers. If not, pick up an issue sometime. Or check out the homepage today — it’s loaded with extra nuts!
We’ve covered the Birthers on The Daily Beast for some time now—admittedly, and appropriately, mainly to mock. We’ll see what the future brings.
We posted our response on The Daily Beast’s tumblr. See above!
… all I want to know is… couldn’t they have come up with a better name than “Birthers”?
Gotta love the instant feedback from the media outlets. Here’s to hoping we can do this in PHL.
Please shut up about President Obama birth certificate and report some real news
